September rewards overview, available for sign-ups during the entire month!
    – Sent out on September 1st  –

If you, too, would like to get started as an artist, if there are things I can teach you, or if you are simply interested in my work, you might wanna consider supporting me on Patreon, where you can get your hands on exclusive guides, art lessons and tutorials, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at my current projects. I am currently focusing on two types of rewards: the creative ones with artwork, and the instructional ones with guides and lessons.

    Patreon.com/SabrinaK

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, you will find the monthly newsletter filled with new projects and artwork for the upcoming con season.”Christmas Star” is a recent illustration I prepared for upcoming Christmas cards (and believe me, it was reaaally difficult to think of snow and winter with the hot weather we got this month) and you will get the entire inking and colouring process in a real time video.

As always, a monthly illustration is available for in-depth studying – you’ll have “Queen of Time” with a commented guide and the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step, as well as both a 1h30 real time video and 9min time lapse version. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

“Oh! My Dress” is a project I have been sharing with my Patreon supporters over the last few months. You might remember the fashion designs I regularly post on Instagram – well, I’m pleased to say that they are part of a special project which will be unveiled next week! It’s currently being printed and I’m thrilled to share it with you! Do you have an idea of what it could be? ; )

Anyways, the project being completed, a sketchbook is now available for my patrons. It contains finished illustrations, as well as research sketches, with around 40 fashion designs. If you are interested in seeing the creation of a fashion illustration, you will still receive the August rewards for any signup before the 31st, which contain a real time video footage of a dress.

ArtClass & ArtJourney – Balance and Dynamism

Initially, I had created a lesson focused on character creation, but changed my mind over the last few days to focus on balance and dynamism. Seeing my students’ latest pieces of work, those topics seemed more interesting to improve their drawings, so here we go! The lesson being created on such short notice, my translator didn’t have the chance to translate it yet, so there it is currently French-only, and the English version will follow soon. But, as always, the contents remain the same: video, PDF print-out, exercises to go further and test your knowledge.

Balance is very basic yet important to master as an aspiring artist. The human body balances itself out in real life and we don’t think about how to move – yet I have noticed that drawing properly balanced characters is among the most common things my pupils usually don’t get right. Dynamism, on the other hand, allows to draw characters moving in a fluent, expressive way, while being seemingly animated by a “line of action”, a force that stretches them from head to toe. Both concepts are complementary, and I hope to bring them closer to you with that lesson, and allow you to take your character drawings to the next step!

For this month, my ArtJourney sketchbook is integrated into the ArtClass, seeing as it deals with the same topics. I thought that dynamism might be less easy to grasp in the beginning, so I have included all my sketches back when I was learning and trying to master that topic. Each character is drawn with the action line alongside, so that you can distinguish how they move and where the dynamic comes from.

By the way, fun fact of the day, I was actually motivated to study dynamism after seeing the anime Yuri on Ice – so, here’s one of the rare times you’ll see me draw fanarts, with a little tribute to Yurio whose ice skating got the fangirl out of me. Really, just have a look at the beautifully animated Welcome to the Madness :’D More seriously, I recommend this anime if you’d like to get a better grasp of what dynamism “feels” like – a body that moves perfectly, with fluid movements. Though, if you’re not into ice skating and more into volleyball, I recently watched Haikyuu, where they also have great examples of dynamism. The best example which quickly sums it up is, in my eyes, the Haikyuu – Season 2 – Opening 2.

    Q&A Session

A while ago, I asked my audience to ask questions, things they would like to know… Without further delay, let’s start the Q&A Session. I hope to satisfy your curiosity, and thank you so much for participating!

    Art-related

Do you draw all day or only when you feel like it?

As much as I love drawing, I don’t draw all day. I often stumble upon people who think that being a freelance artist means drawing all day, but as a small business there are many other aspects to take care of: bookkeeping, administrative tasks such as answering to client mails, organizing events, updating websites, etc.

Statistically speaking, I’m more into computer work in the afternoons, and drawing in the evenings. Since drawing is something that calms me, I like to spend some cosy evenings while colouring illustrations, for example.

What do you think when you see old artwork of yours?

It’s often a weird moment. Back when I drew them, I was often proud of them and thought I did well, but when I see them some years later, I realize that they are completely different from what I remembered. I find it interesting to see how I have evolved, and thinking that I will keep on evolving with every passing year is a huge motivation to keep on going forward!

Do you have your own art studio?

It’s my dream to have an studio but unfortunately, I don’t earn enough to have one and I’m working from home. Nevertheless, it’s my goal to get a nice space I can use for creativity only. I sometimes had photographers and reporters who wanted to visit my “artist studio”, which is a small corner in my bedroom, and it is always a bit awkward to invite strangers there, so I’d love to get a proper, professional space XD

What are your favourite art supplies?

My absolute favourites are definitely Copic markers, I couldn’t do without! For more sketchy work, I also love coloured Pentel Brush Pens.

I want to draw with Copics but don’t have enough money to purchase them all, what should I do? TuT

Honestly, I don’t think that you need the entire range of Copics to create nice illustrations. I started with two sets of around 100 markers, and as time went by, I realized that there were multiple colours I seldom used. For instance, I keep on refilling my beige tones for drawing skin, but I still have some yellows or turquoise left from my first order of about 8 years ago because I rarely use them. I suggest that you have a look at the colours and pick the ones you’re sure that you’ll use; two or three tones per colour would be enough to get a decent first start. A light tone, a middle tone, and a darker tone from the same category will allow you to have a good rendering, without needing to have all the intermediary colours.

    Trivia

    Any reading recommendations?

As of late, I love webtoons, Korean webcomic series! Amfong my favourites, there is Light and Shadows, the story of an mysterious maid who marries a duke and vows to change the kingdom with her new position. Another one I love is L’impérieux destin du Dr Elise (I couldn’t find the English or original title… ), telling the story of a great surgeon nowadays who gets to relive her previous life as a hated empress, and who wants to make up for her past mistakes. I’m more in a historical / romantic / drama period right now XD If anyone has any recommendations as well, feel free to share!

    Favourite tea?! : D

Argh, that’s a tough question! I prefer lighter teas, so I’m more into green or white, and I like them fruity. Sooo… I’ll go ahead and pick two: Green Paul et Virginie tea by Dammann Frères and white Automne Blanc by Mariage Frères.

Have you ever been to Japan?

No, but it’s one of my life goals. It’s my dream to go there, especially with a biiig empty suitcase, and go shopping until I can’t take it anymore!

Thank you so much for participating!
If you have any questions, of course, you can ask anytime! ; )

See you soon for new updates!

    ILLUS – Queen of Time

Hi everyone! Those who visited me last month in Contern have already discovered this artwork, so time to post it online as well. I was inspired to work with a more “steampunkish” style again, so here we go with the proper scan and a time lapse of the creative process!

The Original Artwork is available for sale in my Online Shop.

New goodies are to come with that motive, can’t wait to show them to you! It is already available as a A4 Collector Print on textured paper, but I would like to create bookmarks and posters as well. Would you like to see it as another specific piece of merchandize?

“Queen of Time” will be available in my Patreon rewards on August 1st.

    All 5+ Supporters will receive:
    – 2 videos of this illustration (9min complete time lapse +1h30 real time video)
    – PDF containing with commented step-by-step photos
    – complete used material references

If you wish to receive monthly art lessons, tutorials, behind-the-scene files and exclusive material while supporting my artwork, you might want to subscribe to Patreon : )

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, you will find the monthly newsletter. This month is also video month, with three of them awaiting you! Alternating between real time and accelerated time lapse, you will also find one of them which has both versions along with a guide and the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

“Illustrations” – Sketchbook 2018 vol.2 is also now available as a PDF and contains all my artwork created over the last months. You will be able to find the finished illustrations, as well as my research sketches and doodles, and the failed attempts which didn’t turn out how they should have been.

    ArtClass – Anatomy Foreshortening

New ArtClass for all my 10+ Patrons, focusing once again on anatomy since some students seemed eager to draw different poses and angles but didn’t necessary understand foreshortening before. This lesson will help you understand basic foreshortening, to draw characters from low-angle and high-angle, and thus draw more interesting shots in your manga and / or illustrations!

As always, you have a video, PDF print-out and exercises to go further and test your knowledge. As always, the lessons are perfectly bilingual in EN/FR to help a broader audience, and the English versions are translated by native speakers.

    ArtJourney – Anatomy

ArtJourney files are my response to people asking for more behind-the-scenes work and are a monthly series of sketchbooks with annotations, ideas, exercises, used resources and inspiration. Each file gives you a tour through my private sketchbooks and personal research on specific topics. On the contrary to my illustrations, the sketches will be far less glamourous – but I think they will be a good insight about how to evolve as an artist, and I hope they will help you understand concepts to use for your own artistic journey!

I’ve used my spare time this month to focus on facial anatomy, since characters are what I draw most. I’ve learned some new things, tried to change features –  as an artist, it’s always important to get back to basics, keep on drawing and studying, and look out for new challenges!

    Summerakademie 2018

The Summerakademie ended last week with a final exhibition and I’ve had the pleasure to animate two workshops every day over those two weeks! The students were so sweet and I think their work deserves to be shown around, so give them some applause ; )

My students from the afternoon session, posing in front of their work.

My goal for those two weeks was to help young people discover the basics of manga drawing, and develop their artistic skills. The first week was focused on the basics – anatomy, proportions, perspective, character-design. In the second half, my students worked on their own manga page. It was the very first time for most of them – some of them enjoyed it, other ones didn’t expect it to be so much work, but in the end, I think everyone was proud of the outcome!

Basics during he first week – faces, anatomy and perspective.

Manga pages and character-designs of the heroes.

Final exhibition, with an entire wall for the Manga-Workshops.
Look at how motivated and hard-working the students were!

Both groups were more quiet and probably shy at the beginning, but they opened up as the days went by and eventually ended up being very merry and cheerful, so that the lessons always ended with a good atmosphere. Before class and during breaks, they loved sharing their thoughts on the blackboard, as you can see below – now, that’s art, isn’t it?:D

Student’s collective masterpiece on the blackboard.

As always, the final exhibition allowed to discover the work of the other groups. There were once again beautiful artwork in various fields, such as nude drawing, sculpture, paintings, … For the most exotic classes, there was even a perfume atelier, and a sewing workshop, with the group wearing their own creations during the exhibition!

Creations by other workshop participants at the Summerakademie.

    BD de Contern & News!

The Festival de la BD de Contern will take place this week-end – are you excited? Because I totally am, with a big surprise I’ve been working on over the last few months for you: a completely new assortment is awaiting you! All my elder artwork have been removed, to make place for new motives, new goodies, new prints, and even a new booth setup. Let’s have a look at this;)

Visit the Shop – “Prints & Goodies” Section!

    Bookmarks

9 new motives are waiting for you – what would be a convention without our beloved bookmarks? Though I didn’t intend to use them, many of you asked for the Queen series, so some of them are now available – they are limited to 25 copies each and no reprint is planned, so make sure to grab yours this week-end or in the shop;)

    A5 Glossy Prints & Posters

A dozen of new posters have also been printed, most of them with my 4 Seasons Tea artwork, the Queen series as many of you requested, and some other motives. There will still be a few A5 glossy prints for sale (see motives below), but I will most probably stop offering them on conventions and keep them for Patreon Supporters or Shop exclusivities. Why? I’ve found a much better alternative… let’s jump to the next section!

    A4 High Quality Textured Prints

While thinking about how I could improve the quality of my prints for you, I tried new prints on A4 textured paper and was stunned myself by the result: it looks completely like an original, with little variation on the colours and texture – due to its grained paper, those prints’ rendering is the best you can get. If you were hesitating to get an original artwork due to its higher price, here’s the almost similar, more affordable alternative. Some of the illustrations are currently only available in this format and will remain like this, allowing you to get your hands on a limited motive!

For every A4 print purchase, you will also receive a little additional gift print – isn’t that one more reason to fetch one? ; )

    Queen Sticker Sheets

Yes, the Queens are everywhere 8D I got some problems with the sticker machine I bought a few months ago, and since people appreciated the stickers, I turned them into a proper sticker sheet.

    Tote Bags

As announced last time, the tote bags are always limited to allow a more unique motives – there are three new ones, Justitia and Autumn Rooibos being limited to around 20 copies. The print is once again injected into the cloth and of washmachine-friendly quality, so that your tote bag can accompany you anywhere!

The last few “Queen” Tote Bags are still available in my shop, for those who’d like to get one of those.

    Badges

Badges were also among the products I didn’t intend to recreate, but as my old stock got raided during my last few events and people asked for more… here we go! You will find 3 different duos in cute packages handmade with love <3 Once again, limited prints with a dozen packages for each series!

Why so many limited products? I have been attending conventions for almost 4 years now – of course, I have made mistakes and learnt along the way. One of my biggest miscalculations were always that I printed too much. The cost of some “unpopular” products was sometimes high, and I kept a huge stock in my attic without knowing what to do with it. Printing smaller quantities brings along benefits for both me and you – it allows me to test new products without investing too much, and allows you to get more limited and unique items. Let’s face it, isn’t it boring to see the same pieces of artwork over years and years?

Anyways … other “regular” products are still available as well, such as my manga and recent artbook, as well as handcrafted notebooks and on-the-spot commissions. I have also printed new goodies for the surprise packages, starting with long maxi-bookmarks – along with an original artwork, you will now get only special prints which are not, and will never be, available on my booth. So, whatever you buy, you can be sure that you won’t have twice the same things!

Most products are now available in my shop’s “Prints & Goodies” Section

A3 posters are, unfortunately, not available since the shipping fees are almost twice the price of the print itself. But if you’d like to discover everything or if you can’t attend the convention, maybe you’d want to take a look at it, and I hope you’ll enjoy all those news!

I’m waiting for you this week-end in the sports hall of Contern from 10h-18h!
    See you soon : D

    Fashion Art

Hello everyone! Those who are following me on Instagram have already seen that I’m pretty inspired for fashion designs as of late – here are some of my recent designs! For those of you who keep on asking me where I find my ideas, I usually like doodling in a sketchbook and the ideas just come naturally when I start sketching. They are not always good, they often need modifications, but I guess that works the same way for many artists – just start sketching, and the ideas will follow : )

Which dress design do you like most of those three?

I like mixing baroque fashion, costume design and haute couture, and try to use various of those elements, along with concepts and ideas in my designs. Common things I like are flowers, butterflies, jewels, and I like working with themes. From left to right, my themes were “wild” – “butterflies and feminity” – “desert princess”. Other topics I’d like to use in upcoming works are for instance “masquerade” and “matryoshka” – let’s see how they turn out!

To get inspiration, I also like looking up fashion designers from time to time. My top reference is Stella de Libero, who’s designing such wonder wonderful wedding dresses that could come straight out of fairy tales. Another fashion line I appreciate are the wedding dresses worn by Nozomi Sasaki (yes, you got it, I LOVE wedding dresses… hope to wear such a beautiful gown myself one day 8D). Otherwise, I also like lolita brands such as Atelier Pierrot, or generally haute couture gowns. If you’re into high fashion and pretty dresses, I’d recommend to have a look at those references : )

If you are interested in the creative process of my fashion sketches, one of them has been recorded and will be sent out as a 1h real time video to my 5+ Patreon supporters on August 1st! Patreon allows you to get unique content, tutorials and art lessons while supporting my work, thus allowing each of us to mutually help one another and create art together – discover more on Patreon.com/SabrinaK !

    So, what about you?
    Do you like fashion arts?
What are your personal references or designers you look up to?

    Tarot Art – The Moon

Continuing with my tarot card series! This time, I was inspired by The Moon – I couldn’t resist but use my OC Luna for this illustration, seeing as she is the personification of the night in my IllusFairy manga series. Since I know some of you appreciate behind-the-scenes and step-by-step work, I have included some steps of this illustration below as well, and hope you’ll like it!

The original artwork of the tarot motives are now available in my shop. If you wish to get a unique piece of art and appreciate all the details of the blending work, you want to check it out!
    Visit the online shop

For collectors, I also opened a new tier on my Patreon where you can get your hand on a selection of original artwork at a more advantageous rate, along with all the other benefits my supporters receive every month. If you wish to support my work, this can be a way of doing so, while it also allows you to get many benefits from it:)

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, you will find the monthly newsletter, and a recent HD Manga page. It is available in two versions, a screentoned one, and a line art where you can zoom into both versions to discover all the details. As announced in the previous post, one of my Tarot motives is available as a real time video along with a guide and also offers you the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

    ArtClass – Anatomy Double-Pack

I have been assiduously working on my online art lessons and have the pleasure of offering not only one, but two ArtClasses to all my 10+ Patrons! This month’s focus is on anatomy:

The first one, Basic Anatomy, replaces my elder French-only lessons on the same topic and is now available with new illustrations, better audio quality, new explanations, tips, and sketch references. It is more interesting for beginners, seeing as it explains the basics one should know to draw proportions and human bodies.

The second one, Anatomy Improved, is for more advanced students and offers concrete exercises and tips to improve your figure drawings. Learning anatomy doesn’t always have to be tedious, there are many funny ways to improve it!

As always, you have a video, PDF print-out and exercises to go further and test your knowledge. As always, the lessons are perfectly bilingual in EN/FR to help a broader audience, and the English versions are translated by native speakers.

ArtJourney – Ink Work & Manga Pages

ArtJourney files are my response to people asking for more behind-the-scenes work and are a monthly series of sketchbooks with annotations, ideas, exercises, used resources and inspiration. Each file gives you a tour through my private sketchbooks and personal research on specific topics. On the contrary to my illustrations, the sketches will be far less glamourous – but I think they will be a good insight about how to evolve as an artist, and I hope they will help you understand concepts to use for your own artistic journey!

As announced a while ago on my Patreon, I have put my manga project IllusFairy on hold to focus on studies. There were many things I wanted to try but never took the time for, and the latest chapter being concluded, I have eventually decided to slow down for a while and get back to basics. So, this month will focus on Inking and Manga pages – offering you a detailed insight into line arts, ink and feather work and screentones along with my trials and errors along the way!

After testing various things, I redrew one of my elder pages just for fun, as you can see above. It is so interesting to see how one evolves over the years, and how some slight changes in art supplies and technique can dramatically increase the rendering of your artwork!

Tutorials and art lessons are also available in my online shop. You may purchase them directly there if you wish to give it a first try without subscribing to Patreon.
