    Patreon Newsfeed & Downloads

More news are available to my Patreon supporters via the Patreon newsfeed! I’m trying to offer more work-in-progress and project news through the Patreon feed. Current Patreon supporters have immediate access to it as well as a notification to their mailbox – if you wish to discover the news as well, the feed unlocks for every new supporter!

As some people requested, I have completely translated my Patreon page in French, along with a FAQ section since the same questions keep coming back, and which will also soon be available in English. You can access the French version below, or find it in the first few lines on my Patreon:

A special Christmas package has also been sent out to all my current Patreon supporters – if you haven’t received it by the beginning of the second week of December, something must’ve gone totally wrong with the postal office. If that is the case, please notify me asap so I can send you a new one♥

    Artwork

“Fruits des Bois”, which was unveiled at the Walfer Bicherdeeg last month, is our monthly artwork for in-depth studying and comes along with a commented guide, step-by-step photos and the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step, as well as a 1h real time video. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

Though, I have to admit that I got a problem with the recording. While editing some screenshots with Photoshop, the colours went well, but I didn’t manage to get them right with my video editing program, Filmora Wondershare – does anyone know if there are more in-depth parameters, or do you know a good, free or not too expensive video editing program?

    ArtClass – Corrections

I didn’t actually plan on releasing an ArtClass this month, but managed to find the time to create one, which is in my eyes an extension to my former “Beginners’ Mistakes” lesson. The goal here is to focus on analyzing amateur artwork of some of my former students, in order to spot and avoid some of the classical mistakes artists tend to do when starting out.

To illustrate how to proceed, I have recorded an in-depth correction of a former artwork of mine. It illustrates many common mistakes, how to spot them with easy guidelines, and is concluded with a redraw. So, by the way if you’re wondering how I have evolved, here’s a “drawthisagain” with 10 years in between 8D

And, since it’s Christmas soon, my former “Beginners’ Mistakes” ArtClass is also sent along with this lesson. If you missed it or wish to start out with two lessons for this month, you can get it for any signup in December!

In this art lesson, you will get:
    – “Corrections” voice-over video lesson
    – PDF print-out with recap and pictures
    – redraw time lapse + real time video
    – 2 sheets with various pictures to analyze
    – individual feedback and mentoring for the Student Tier

    ArtJourney Special

ArtJourney files are my response to people asking for more behind-the-scenes work and are a monthly series of sketchbooks with annotations, ideas, exercises, used resources and inspiration. Each file gives you a tour through my private sketchbooks and personal research on specific topics. On the contrary to my illustrations, the sketches will be far less glamourous – but I think they will be a good insight about how to evolve as an artist, and I hope they will help you understand concepts to use for your own artistic journey!

    Part 1 – Nude Sketchbook

37p. PDF with all sketches of November and comments for each session.

Nude classes have continued this month, so here’s the second part of my sketchbook! This month, we worked with an elder male model who gave me a hard time at the beginning. He wasn’t fat, but had a bigger belly, and had some body parts with flabby skin. In my drawings, he switched from looking too fat, too young, too weird, and I eventually got to understand his body type at the very end of a 3h lesson – but well, it was always funny and challenging. Even if challenges appear in front of you, now matter the area in your life, I think they are useful to help you evolve. Instead of feeling down, try to see the opportunity, and let them help you grow. It may take time and efforts, but in the end, you’ll see the results;)

    Part 2 – Anatomy Sketchbook

30p. PDF with all sketches of November and comments for each part.

Besides nude classes, I have also been working on personal studies over the two past months, mostly focusing on anatomy and myology. Though it was sometimes very frustrating, especially since I tried to apply muscles correctly upon the skeleton, I eventually ended up getting a more solid grasp of human anatomy. As you can see below, sometimes I was so tired from studying that I started getting pretty weird thoughts… so, for instance, a random Colossal Titan with an Eren just randomly appeared in my sketchbook while working on back muscles 8D

Anyways, as mentioned last month, ArtClasses will resume in January with a special series on anatomy. I’m doing my best to keep them as simple and useful as possible, and I hope they’ll help you!

This month, there are no finished illustration video processes. On a personal level, October has been focused mostly on finishing IllusFairy’s “Frau Holle” chapter, as well as sketching and studying. Besides, commissions and workshops have been taking up an important amount of time as well – this month has been kinda stressful, but very rewarding. I feel that I have learned a lot this month, and I am grateful to have been able to work on such interesting projects. To make up for the lack of finished artwork, all November Patrons will get a whole bunch of commission insight and sketches though, in the hopes that they will help and motivate them for their own work as well !

    IllusFairy – Manga

I’m quite happy to have eventually found time in my schedule again to resume working decently on IllusFairy – and as promised last month to my Patreon supporters, the chapter “Frau Holle” has been completed and sent out as a full ebook in both En + FR !

Besides the ebook, a step-by-step progress of the double-page below is also available to appreciate the creation of a manga page, as well as previews and sketches for the upcoming chapter.

If you’d like to (re)discover classical fairytales in manga version, you can also read it for free on Tapastic. Though Patreon offers an early release and access into all personal sketches and research, IllusFairy will always remain a free to read manga with two updates a week, so enjoy ; )

IllusFairy – Frau Holle – Read on Tapastic!

    ArtClass – Body Types

Usually, people tend to stick with a specific, ideal body type. Nevertheless, especially when creating stories with various characters interacting, it is pretty useful to be able to draw a variety of characters – starting with different body types to immediately create a difference. To get familiar with how to change bodies, we’ll analyze in detail how to draw three different characters: a beanstalk, a couch potato, and a bodybuilder.

In this art lesson, you will get:
    – real time & voice-over video
    – case study with 3 different body types
    – PDF with recap, pictures and exercises

49p. PDF with all sketches of October and comments for each session.

Looking for new challenges, I have enrolled in classes with nude models. Though I didn’t know what to expect, it proved to be very interesting. In that room where a dozen of students were drawing without stopping, I had to face my own weaknesses and limitations, yet seeing the others at work motivated me to keep on drawing and improving. Overall, I think I already learnt a lot. It never occurred to me, but having a living being standing still in front of you really allows to grasp all the subtleties of the human body – to a way greater extent than when you learn with photographs and 2D references.

If you’re looking to improve your artwork, I recommend everyone to try at least once a drawing session with a human model. It doesn’t have to be in class or with nudes at all – simply asking friends or family to stay still for a short while can already be very helpful. Little recommendation between us, the best moment to draw someone is when they’re watching TV, as people usually tend to be concentrated on the screen and thus don’t move that much 😉

    Part 2 – Anatomy Sketchbook

29p. PDF with all sketches of October and comments for each session.

Besides nude classes, I have also been working on personal studies. My teacher recommended it was best to have a solid knowledge on human anatomy before starting the lessons, so I’ve been going back to basics and focused on skeletons and muscles. Since it’s a rather difficult topic, I have been combining many books and resources to develop an easier method to learn human anatomy. There are still things I’d like to master and body parts I haven’t perfectly been able to grasp yet, so I’ll keep on studying on a personal level and during the upcoming nude sessions this month.

Generally speaking, I don’t think there will be much new artwork until the end of the year, as well as no ArtClass for December, seeing as I prefer focusing on studies to offer you improved content afterwards. Despite that, I am keeping many ideas for illustrations in mind, and I’ll resume ArtClasses with a special series on anatomy afterwards – I hope that you’ll enjoy, and that the progress will be visible! Meanwhile, thank you so much for your patience, you’re the best<3

    Patreon Newsfeed

More news are now available to my Patreon supporters! I recently started uploading more regularly to my Patreon newsfeed. I used to send all rewards and updates on new projects at the beginning of the month, but as some of my supporters ask me of news from time to time, I started uploading more work in progress, projects and illustration previews. Current Patreon supporters have immediate access to it as well as a notification to their mailbox – if you wish to discover the news as well, the feed unlocks for every new supporter!

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, let’s start with some manga content! As you know, I have recently resumed working on IllusFairy, and to change from traditional artwork, here’s a digital piece for once. You will thus receive “Frau Holle”s chapter cover illustration in HD version, along with the real time video and the PSD file to analyze the different layers. If you wish to give it a try, there will also be a folder with the line art and the used screentones!

While talking about IllusFairy, a dedicated sketchbook will be available this entire month. I have also worked on some designs I can use in the next tales – mostly princess dresses, servants clothes, random background character designs. A student asked me a while ago if I had some references for medieval fantasy clothing, so since I was in the mood, I’ve thought of those below. You are very welcome to use them as inspirations for your own work (though keep it private use only please).

And to go over to classical illustrations – as always, a monthly artwork is available for in-depth studying – you’ll have “Fruits du Verger” with a commented guide and the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step, as well as a real time video. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

ArtClass – Copic Colouring – Hair

And speaking of colorations using Copic markers – to fit my students’ needs as they asked more questions regarding colouring and blending as of late, this month’s art lesson answers most questions while giving advice and presenting 4 different colouring techniques, both with and without blender. The focus is on hair – the same model has been used four times to illustrate the difference between those techniques.

During workshops or with online students, it often happens that the blender is seen as a “magical tool” which creates beautiful gradations – nevertheless, a wrong use results in the opposite. Here, you’ll learn when to use the blender according to your needs, as well as how to create shadings without it.

In this art lesson, you will get:
    – real time & voice-over video presenting the four techniques
    – HD scan of those four illustrations with colour references
    – line art to print out and colour yourself

If you want to give it a try, feel free to save the image below and print it out to test some colourings yourself : )

Concerning the English Artclass version, after giving it a long thought, I will put it on hold for a while. It is not definite, but it costs me both money to pay a native translator, and time to rework the original version – both being very precious, as I have to admit. Seeing as my students are all French-speaking from Luxembourg, Belgium and France, removing the English version won’t have any major influence for now.

EDIT: I just found a new translator! This month’s ArtClass is thus still in French only, but we’re working on the translation, as well as on the previous lesson which was French only as well. Please be patient, as the English versions will resume soon.

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, you will find the monthly newsletter filled with new projects and artwork for the upcoming con season.”Christmas Star” is a recent illustration I prepared for upcoming Christmas cards (and believe me, it was reaaally difficult to think of snow and winter with the hot weather we got this month) and you will get the entire inking and colouring process in a real time video.

As always, a monthly illustration is available for in-depth studying – you’ll have “Queen of Time” with a commented guide and the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step, as well as both a 1h30 real time video and 9min time lapse version. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

“Oh! My Dress” is a project I have been sharing with my Patreon supporters over the last few months. You might remember the fashion designs I regularly post on Instagram – well, I’m pleased to say that they are part of a special project which will be unveiled next week! It’s currently being printed and I’m thrilled to share it with you! Do you have an idea of what it could be? ; )

Anyways, the project being completed, a sketchbook is now available for my patrons. It contains finished illustrations, as well as research sketches, with around 40 fashion designs. If you are interested in seeing the creation of a fashion illustration, you will still receive the August rewards for any signup before the 31st, which contain a real time video footage of a dress.

ArtClass & ArtJourney – Balance and Dynamism

Initially, I had created a lesson focused on character creation, but changed my mind over the last few days to focus on balance and dynamism. Seeing my students’ latest pieces of work, those topics seemed more interesting to improve their drawings, so here we go! The lesson being created on such short notice, my translator didn’t have the chance to translate it yet, so there it is currently French-only, and the English version will follow soon. But, as always, the contents remain the same: video, PDF print-out, exercises to go further and test your knowledge.

Balance is very basic yet important to master as an aspiring artist. The human body balances itself out in real life and we don’t think about how to move – yet I have noticed that drawing properly balanced characters is among the most common things my pupils usually don’t get right. Dynamism, on the other hand, allows to draw characters moving in a fluent, expressive way, while being seemingly animated by a “line of action”, a force that stretches them from head to toe. Both concepts are complementary, and I hope to bring them closer to you with that lesson, and allow you to take your character drawings to the next step!

For this month, my ArtJourney sketchbook is integrated into the ArtClass, seeing as it deals with the same topics. I thought that dynamism might be less easy to grasp in the beginning, so I have included all my sketches back when I was learning and trying to master that topic. Each character is drawn with the action line alongside, so that you can distinguish how they move and where the dynamic comes from.

By the way, fun fact of the day, I was actually motivated to study dynamism after seeing the anime Yuri on Ice – so, here’s one of the rare times you’ll see me draw fanarts, with a little tribute to Yurio whose ice skating got the fangirl out of me. Really, just have a look at the beautifully animated Welcome to the Madness :’D More seriously, I recommend this anime if you’d like to get a better grasp of what dynamism “feels” like – a body that moves perfectly, with fluid movements. Though, if you’re not into ice skating and more into volleyball, I recently watched Haikyuu, where they also have great examples of dynamism. The best example which quickly sums it up is, in my eyes, the Haikyuu – Season 2 – Opening 2.

    ArtClass – Anatomy Foreshortening

New ArtClass for all my 10+ Patrons, focusing once again on anatomy since some students seemed eager to draw different poses and angles but didn’t necessary understand foreshortening before. This lesson will help you understand basic foreshortening, to draw characters from low-angle and high-angle, and thus draw more interesting shots in your manga and / or illustrations!

As always, you have a video, PDF print-out and exercises to go further and test your knowledge. As always, the lessons are perfectly bilingual in EN/FR to help a broader audience, and the English versions are translated by native speakers.

I’ve used my spare time this month to focus on facial anatomy, since characters are what I draw most. I’ve learned some new things, tried to change features –  as an artist, it’s always important to get back to basics, keep on drawing and studying, and look out for new challenges!

    Summerakademie 2018

The Summerakademie ended last week with a final exhibition and I’ve had the pleasure to animate two workshops every day over those two weeks! The students were so sweet and I think their work deserves to be shown around, so give them some applause ; )

My students from the afternoon session, posing in front of their work.

My goal for those two weeks was to help young people discover the basics of manga drawing, and develop their artistic skills. The first week was focused on the basics – anatomy, proportions, perspective, character-design. In the second half, my students worked on their own manga page. It was the very first time for most of them – some of them enjoyed it, other ones didn’t expect it to be so much work, but in the end, I think everyone was proud of the outcome!

Basics during he first week – faces, anatomy and perspective.

Manga pages and character-designs of the heroes.

Final exhibition, with an entire wall for the Manga-Workshops.
Look at how motivated and hard-working the students were!

Both groups were more quiet and probably shy at the beginning, but they opened up as the days went by and eventually ended up being very merry and cheerful, so that the lessons always ended with a good atmosphere. Before class and during breaks, they loved sharing their thoughts on the blackboard, as you can see below – now, that’s art, isn’t it?:D

Student’s collective masterpiece on the blackboard.

As always, the final exhibition allowed to discover the work of the other groups. There were once again beautiful artwork in various fields, such as nude drawing, sculpture, paintings, … For the most exotic classes, there was even a perfume atelier, and a sewing workshop, with the group wearing their own creations during the exhibition!

Creations by other workshop participants at the Summerakademie.

    ArtClass – Anatomy Double-Pack

I have been assiduously working on my online art lessons and have the pleasure of offering not only one, but two ArtClasses to all my 10+ Patrons! This month’s focus is on anatomy:

The first one, Basic Anatomy, replaces my elder French-only lessons on the same topic and is now available with new illustrations, better audio quality, new explanations, tips, and sketch references. It is more interesting for beginners, seeing as it explains the basics one should know to draw proportions and human bodies.

The second one, Anatomy Improved, is for more advanced students and offers concrete exercises and tips to improve your figure drawings. Learning anatomy doesn’t always have to be tedious, there are many funny ways to improve it!

As always, you have a video, PDF print-out and exercises to go further and test your knowledge. As always, the lessons are perfectly bilingual in EN/FR to help a broader audience, and the English versions are translated by native speakers.

On the contrary to my illustrations, the sketches will be far less glamourous – but I think they will be a good insight about how to evolve as an artist, and I hope they will help you understand concepts to use for your own artistic journey!

As announced a while ago on my Patreon, I have put my manga project IllusFairy on hold to focus on studies. There were many things I wanted to try but never took the time for, and the latest chapter being concluded, I have eventually decided to slow down for a while and get back to basics. So, this month will focus on Inking and Manga pages – offering you a detailed insight into line arts, ink and feather work and screentones along with my trials and errors along the way!

After testing various things, I redrew one of my elder pages just for fun, as you can see above. It is so interesting to see how one evolves over the years, and how some slight changes in art supplies and technique can dramatically increase the rendering of your artwork!

Tutorials and art lessons are also available in my online shop. You may purchase them directly there if you wish to give it a first try without subscribing to Patreon.

    Patreon – June 2018

June rewards overview, available for sign-ups during the entire month!

If you, too, would like to get started as an artist, if there are things I can teach you, or if you are simply interested in my work, you might wanna consider supporting me on Patreon, where you can get your hands on exclusive guides, art lessons and tutorials, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at my current projects. I am currently focusing on two types of rewards: the creative ones with artwork, and the instructional ones with guides and lessons.

    Patreon.com/SabrinaK

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, you will find the monthly newsletter, and a Patreon-exclusive illustration. It is available in two versions, a screentoned one, and a free-to-colour line art. Another illustration is available as a real time video along with a guide which offers you a commented insight into the creative process as well as the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

I have also created reference files for male character-designs. Students who start out drawing often ask me for references concerning hair and clothes, since they don’t necessary have the ideas for varied designs. The folder contains over 90 references that are free to use for your own characters.

    ArtClass – Drawing Hands

A new art lesson has been added to the current database and is focusing on Drawing Hands. It replaced my elder French-only lesson on the same topic and is now available with new illustrations, better audio quality, new explanations tips, as well as reference sheets. Since hands are always a tricky part to draw, three different methods are presented. I have tried each of them with my students in real life and they usually appreciated either one of those – hopefully, they will help you master drawing hands as well!

As always, you have a video, PDF print-out and exercises to go further and test your knowledge. As always, the lessons are perfectly bilingual in EN/FR to help a broader audience, and the English versions are translated by native speakers.

    ArtJourney – Shades & Lights

I have the pleasure of introducing a new reward to the 10+ tier: ArtJourney files! What are those about? Basically, it will be a monthly series of complete sketchbooks with annotations, ideas, exercises, used resources and inspiration. Each file gives you a tour through my private sketchbooks and personal research on specific topics, on how to improve in various areas. Each month will focus on a specific topic, starting with Shades & Lights – to improve, I think that it is best to stay focused on one topic until you master it, rather than constantly switching between topics you won’t understand correctly if you don’t take the necessary time for it : )

Over the last months, people requested more behind-the-scenes work. I am used to focus mostly on illustration, but as a matter of fact, studies are also an important part of the artistic process. I am striving to create always better pieces of artwork for you and to get to that point, I keep on studying and sketching. When creating art lessons, I am also used to trying out all the exercises I give to my students; it allows me to be sure I have mastered the concepts I am teaching and helps me revise them for my own art. In those files, you will be able to see all my personal sketches – the better and the worst ones along with various notes and exercises you can try yourself. On the contrary to my illustrations, the sketches will be far less glamourous – but I think they will be a good insight about how to evolve as an artist, and I hope they will help you understand concepts to use for your own artistic journey!

Tutorials and art lessons are also available in my online shop. You may purchase them directly there if you wish to give it a first try without subscribing to Patreon.

    We love Chocolate!

I have recently been working on a gift project with chocolate!
On top of the illustration, I tried making a sweet packaging and filled it with pralines. Do you like chocolate as well? : )

For those who are interested in a behind the scenes process, I recorded a full time lapse video, photographed the references of the material used on every step, and am working on a commented walkthrough of this illustration. Everything will be released next month on Patreon.com/SabrinaK !

Sorry for the weird background music in the video XD I keep on getting copyright complaints about the music I used despite having tried pretty much everything so I just took one of the random audios from my video editor. If anyone knows where I can get my hands on good royalty free music, I’d love to get the link ; )

    Artwork

For those who are more interested in creative perks, you will find the monthly newsletter, a HD comic and Patreon-exclusive illustration, as well as an illustration step-by-steps, which offers you a commented insight into the creative process as well as the material references in the exact order as they have been used for each step. You can see it as an explanation on how I work on illustrations, or as a guide to help you with your colorations using Copic Markers.

Patreon Blog – Organization & Time Management

Pblog is a collection of guides covering various art-related issues for freelancers, presenting the more technical and “behind-the-scenes” aspects of an artist’s life which are often underestimated by most people. This new guide is 47 pages long and focuses on organization and time management. It gives you many tips to work faster and better, no matter the area, focusing on advice learnt during my executive assistant studies and personal experience.

Funnily enough, since I got started as an independent artist, I am spending more time handling non-artistic tasks than anything else: looking for clients, accountancy, administration, etc. Being self-employed, I realized more than ever how important it is to be disciplined and focused in order to find a proper balance between artistic and administrative work. While writing this guide, I was faced once again to the basics of time management learnt before, and analyzed my current situation to implement some small changes – I discovered once again how much time I spend answering emails, why I procrastinate screentoning manga pages, …

I hope that this guide will help you face your own “weaknesses” to get the best out of you!

    Art Lesson – Linearts

A new art lesson has been added to the current database and is focusing on Character Design & Shapes. It will help you create visually distinct characters with more impact, who inspire emotion in the reader. We often unconsciously associate character traits with certain shapes and perceive a character accordingly – this lesson shows you how to use that to your advantage.

As always, you have a video, PDF print-out and exercises to go further and test your knowledge. As stated last month, I have been reworking my entire presentation to make the lessons’ layout more agreeable and switched to a bilingual EN/FR version to help a broader audience. When it comes to teaching, I want my lessons to be complete and easily understandable, so I ended up asking for help for the translations, seeing as I still do many mistakes in English and often translate literally. Art lessons and PBlog files being my most important rewards, they are translated by native speakers from now on, in order to offer you more agreeable tutorials without mistakes.

Other tutorials and art lessons are available in the shop. You may purchase them directly there if you wish to give it a first try, or receive the files of your choice every month depending on your Patreon tier.
